This is a piece I did for the Quite Alright Halloween monster-themed art show – it’s the Metaluna Mutant from the classic sci-fi B-movie This Island Earth!
A few notes about process. I wanted to add a lot of depth to the finished piece, so each level of the illustration was mounted to black card stock, and then foam was glued to the back so that I could stack each layer and get a nice shadow from each section within the frame. It ended up being 5 layers – the background sky, the cliffs, a layer of clear plastic with a frosted spiral design, the mutant, and finally the screaming earthlings in the front layer. It’s a technique I’ve never tried, but I’m super happy with the finished result.
