Baltimore Oriole

Baltimore Oriole

The Baltimore Oriole! Now that I’ve completed my series of year-round birds of Niagara, I’m moving on to a set of migratory birds of Niagara. I did the Turkey Vulture already, so this is number 2 in the series – the beautiful orange breasted Baltimore Oriole. The bird got the Baltimore part of its name from the colours of the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore, which was adopted as the flag of Maryland. And the baseball team is named after the bird. I think I need a flow chart to piece together who and what came first. Regardless, the Baltimore Oriole is a beautiful bird, and I tried to incorporate some nicely manicured grass into the background of this illustration – not unlike Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
