Indigo Bunting

Indigo Bunting

This is the fifth in my series of migratory birds of Niagara – the positively iridescent Indigo Bunting. Despite their colour, these beautiful birds are actually in the same family as Cardinals, and just like Cardinals, the males are the vividly coloured, while females have brown feathers. HOWEVER, male Indigo Buntings are only blue over the summer during mating season – which is when they descend into Niagara. During the winter months they turn brown just like the females. Neat!
