Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

This is the sixth in my series of migratory birds of Niagara, and twelfth (and final) in my series of bird illustrations. Phew! This was probably the most difficult out of all of them, simply due to the amount of colouration on these beautiful birds. It was hard to decide what to highlight, and what to remove, but I’m happy with the result. My favourite thing about these woodpeckers is the patterns they leave in the tree bark. Little rows and columns of squares and rectangles where they’ve pecked away, searching for food.
