For Christmas this year, my good friend Heather commissioned me to make some travel posters of Malaysia for her husband (and my friend) Phil. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. This is the third and final in the series – Batu Caves in Gombak, Malaysia. This was the most time consuming and detailed of the three posters. The steps (surprisingly) didn’t take long, but illustrating the massive statue of the Hindu deity Lord Murugan took quite some time. Looking at the finished product, it was time well spent. A big thank you to Heather and Phil’s mom Connie for suggesting adding some monkeys into the poster – having them in silhouette hanging from trees in the foreground really adds to the depth of the scene.
I designed custom typography for each poster. Given the ornate nature of everything at this site, I wanted to really push myself to make something fancy. Varied line weight. Ball terminals. Funky letterforms. It’s all there. I enjoyed designing this text so much, in fact, that it led me to another project.
